Primary School - British International School of Zagreb
The first six years of learning fall under Primary School which is the cornerstone of any child’s education.
Here, at the British International School of Zagreb (BISZ), we strive to install a sense of wonder and excitement for learning at this age.
Young students want to naturally discover, develop and gather knowledge, ascertain skills, be challenged and grow at the same time.
All of which is provided within class timetables that hone on core subjects such as Literacy, Numeracy and Science, through to ICT, PE, the IPC, Music, Art, and Modern Foreign Languages.
We also offer extra-curricular afternoon activities to cap off the day! In addition to the academics, we value each child at BISZ as a member of our growing school community. We embrace the development of school spirit, unity and a sense of togetherness.
We eat breakfast, lunch and tea together, we have recess and lunch together, school assemblies, fun days, school plays, spelling bees, costume and sports days, and much more, all together. Every day is a new day in our Primary School, our teachers aim to provide fun, encouraging and meaningful school experiences in a multi-cultural setting fit for all, right in the heart of Zagreb. A foundation upon which each and every students’ future education will be based.

Primary School - British International School of Zagreb
Why choose the British International School of Zagreb (BISZ) and an International Primary Curriculum for Your Child?
As the world becomes increasingly interconnected, the way we educate our children is changing. More families are now considering international schools for their children—especially at the primary level, where foundational skills and mind sets are formed. If you’re a parent weighing your options, here’s why choosing an international primary school might be one of the most valuable decisions you can make for your child’s future.
1. A Global Curriculum That Goes Beyond Borders An international primary programme is designed to provide a global perspective. These curricula are not restricted by national boundaries or limited cultural perspectives. Instead, it focuses on universal values, cross-cultural understanding, and inquiry-based learning.
Why is this important? In an increasingly globalised job market, being able to think beyond local paradigms is essential. A child exposed to an international education from an early age learns to appreciate diversity, develop empathy, and consider multiple viewpoints.
2. Inquiry-Based Learning Unlike traditional models that often focus on rote learning, at the British International School of Zagreb (BISZ), our international primary curriculum promotes inquiry-based learning. This approach encourages student curiosity, independent exploration, critical thinking, and problem-solving; skills that are foundational for lifelong learning.
Why is this important? Students who learn how to ask the right questions, investigate ideas, and draw conclusions on their own are better equipped for higher education and real-world challenges.
3. English-Medium Instruction with Multilingual Support International schools usually offer English as the medium of instruction, while also promoting proficiency in other languages. Many also provide strong support for English as an Additional Language (EAL) learners, ensuring that language is not a barrier to academic success.
Why is this important? English is the global language of business and communication, and it opens doors to international opportunities. Learning other languages alongside English fosters cognitive development and cultural agility.
4. Focus on Holistic Development BISZ international primary programme emphasises not only on the academics but also on social and emotional development, physical education, creative arts, and ethical development. Students are encouraged to be balanced individuals—confident, compassionate, and responsible.
Why is this important? Success in life isn’t just about test scores. Emotional intelligence, communication skills, and resilience are just as important—and international schools recognise and nurture these traits early on.
5. Exposure to Diverse Cultures and Ideas International schools often have a rich mix of students from different nationalities, religions, and cultural backgrounds. This diversity becomes a living classroom where children learn to respect, understand, and collaborate with others.
Why is this important? Children who grow up in multicultural environments are more open-minded and adaptive. They’re more likely to thrive in diverse workplaces and lead with cultural sensitivity.
6. Highly-Qualified International Teachers International schools typically attract experienced, globally-minded teachers that use modern teaching strategies and methods to achieve learning outcomes across the curriculum. Many of whom bring global experience and a passion for teaching in innovative and student-centered ways.
Why is this important? Great teachers make a huge difference in how children perceive learning. Skilled international educators are true role-models who can nurture a love for discovery and help each child reach their potential.
7. Seamless Transitions Across Countries For families who relocate internationally—whether for work, lifestyle, or other reasons—an international primary school can provide continuity in education.
Why is this important? Changing schools is a challenge for any child. International programmes provide consistency in curriculum and approach, reducing the stress of relocation.
8. Preparation for Future-Ready Skills The world is changing rapidly. Jobs of the future will require not just academic knowledge, but also skills such as collaboration, creativity, digital literacy, adaptability, and global awareness. International programmes are deliberately designed with these future-ready competencies in mind.
Why is this important? By starting early, your child gains a strong foundation to thrive in an unpredictable and fast-changing world.
9. Strong Emphasis on Values and Citizenship Many international schools weave values such as integrity, respect, sustainability, and service into their daily teaching. At the British International School of Zagreb (BISZ), children are not just taught what to learn, but how to contribute meaningfully to the world.
Why is this important? In today’s world, it's more important than ever to raise thoughtful, principled individuals who are prepared to make a positive impact.
10. A Supportive and Nurturing Environment International primary schools often maintain smaller class sizes, ensuring more personalised attention. They also invest in pastoral care and community building, creating a safe, nurturing space where children feel seen and supported.
Why is this important? A positive, secure environment fosters emotional well-being, confidence, and the freedom to take risks in learning—all essential for growth.
